The Beginning
Founded in St. Louis, Missouri by A.P. Erker as a dedicated optical craft center crafting bespoke eyewear, lenses, and scientific optics.
For more than 145 years, five generations of Erker family leadership have preserved a culture of uncompromising optical craftsmanship, authentic heritage, and forward-looking frame design.
In 1879, master optician A.P. Erker opened the doors of Erkers Optical Co. in St. Louis, Missouri. The original company was devoted to optical precision in all forms—offering custom-fitted spectacles, sunglasses, cameras, microscopes, telescopes, binoculars, and protective goggles.
Throughout the decades, the company remained at the epicenter of historic technological achievements. In 1904, Erkers was appointed as the Official Photographer for the St. Louis World's Fair, documenting historic innovations with precision lenses. In 1927, our optical artisans engineered and hand-assembled the custom aviation goggles worn by Charles Lindbergh on his landmark transatlantic flight aboard the Spirit of St. Louis.
By the mid-20th century, we established the first specialized lens surfacing and finishing laboratory west of the Mississippi River. That profound bench-level optical expertise ultimately transitioned into global design and wholesale manufacturing when Studio Optyx was formalized in 2003.
